The test results below are based on the ASTM D1037 Janka Ball test, and all tests results are for natural bamboo floors. Please note that carbonized bamboo floors often test at 10%-20% softer than their natural counterparts.
In short the Janka test determines the strength and durability of a wood floor based on the amount of force required to indent the flooring. The test measures the force required to embed an 11.28 millimeter (0.444 inch) steel ball into wood half its diameter (0.222 inch) deep. This method was chosen so that the result would leave an indentation 100 square millimeters in size. It is one of the best measures to determine the hardness and durability of wood species. It is also a good indicator of how hard a species is to saw or nail. A common use of Janka hardness ratings is to determine whether a species is suitable for use as flooring.
